Firefox 4.0 Beta 6 RC Reviews

Thursday, January 13, 2011

Firefox 4.0 is a new version of the open source browser that would be released by Mozilla. It will add too many new features on Firefox 3.7. It will allow users to run Web-based content offline, and it create a set of online preferences and settings that is stored for each user instead of each computer.
Pros:

    * Save Vertical Space
    * Remove Visual Complexity
    * Can run Web-based content offline

Cons:

    * Have longer Mouse Distance to Tabs
    * Break Consistency

Mozilla has released some mock-ups for Firefox 4.0 some days ago. There is two selections show by the Firefox 4.0 mockups; first one is similar to the 3.7 ideas, and the second one taking another step in the Chrome direction. This Firefox 4 beta 6 RC is the last beta version of Firefox. In the Firefox 4.0 beat 4, it added the new Tab Candy, and supports Direct2D. The main changes in this Firefox 4.0 beta is it simplify the toolbar, and changed it to one button. And make the tabs on the top.

It appears that there are only 2 main & major changes which possibly introduced in Firefox 4, a bookmarks widget and a bookmarks tool bar along with a combined go/stop/refresh button. And there is also purpose to create the newest firefox the most users customizable to date.

Some information about Firefox 4.0
ScreenShots of FireFox 4.0

    * It quite sensibly states that they are "NOT FINAL! THEY ARE ONLY FOR BRAINSTORMING/EXPLORATIO".

Initial Windows Theme Mockups for Firefox 4.0

Version A - Tabs-on-Bottom>

    * For the Bookmarks menu/Bookmarks toolbar, the Firefox 4.0 mockups also maybe add a Bookmarks widget as an upfront replacement (option to turn those on would remain).

Version B - Tabs-on-Top

    * Mozilla says of the "more contentious Tabs-on-Top concept", advantages include that it saves upright space and removes visual difficulty. The additional contentious Tabs-on-Top concept.

Positives

    * Efficiency/Remove Visual Complexity - Right now the tabs have to be connected to something. So we are adding an extra visual element for them to connect to.
    * Shorter Mouse Distance to Page Controls
    * Save Vertical Space

Negatives

    * Longer Mouse Distance to Tabs - Takes longer to mouse to a tab.
    * Breaks Consistency/Familiarity - Moving things confuses existing users.
    * Lost Space - Sandwiched in between the application icon and the window widgets you lose some space.
    * Title is MIA - With the space removed from the titlebar you only get the truncated version in the tab.

New Firefox 4.0 Feature: Combo Stop/Refresh/Go Button.

    * Turns blue on hover.
    * Turns green when you start typing.
    * Turns red when a page is loading.
    * Blends with the location bar when at rest.

Iconography proposed is mostly neutral. To these temporary action driven buttons, adding color will make it clearer incredible is going on.
